THEY SAID NOT TO BITE THE APPLE,
BUT I WAS BORN IN NEW YORK
THEY SAID I BIT A SILVER SPOON
BUT I THINK I BIT A FORK
THEY THOUGHT MY BITE WAS BAD
BUT THEY DIDN'T HEAR MY BARK
THEY SAID TO BITE THE ICE
BUT INSTEAD I ATE MY HEART
THEY SAID TO BITE THE DUST
BUT I CAME CLEAN LONG AGO
THEY SAID TO BITE THE BULLET
BUT THE POWDER WOULDN'T BLOW
THEY SAID I BIT OFF MORE
THAN I COULD CHEW BUT I SAID NAY
THEY SAID TO BITE MY TONGUE
I SAID I HAD A LOT TO SAY.
---------
THEY SAID NOT TO BITE THE APPLE,
BUT I WAS BORN IN NEW YORK
THEY SAID I BIT A SILVER SPOON
BUT I THINK I BIT A FORK
THEY THOUGHT MY BITE WAS BAD
BUT THEY DIDN'T HEAR MY BARK
THEY SAID TO BITE THE ICE
SO I DANCED THERE IN THE DARK
THEY SAID TO BITE THE DUST
BUT I CAME CLEAN LONG AGO
THEY SAID TO BITE THE BULLET
BUT THE POWDER WOULDN'T BLOW
THEY SAID I BIT OFF MORE
THAN I COULD CHEW BUT THEY WERE WRONG
THEY SAID TO BITE MY TONGUE
AND SO I WROTE THIS BLOODY SONG.

We'll Get Along
I took the cigarette from out your lips,
and gave you our first kiss;
you kissed me back, and then pushed me away
with this to say:
you wanted me, but we were in the wrong.
I wanted you, so wrote this fucking song;
then you were fucking me, and it was over--
I knew you were a fucker, not a lover.
We'll get along just fine,
we'll get along just fine,
we'll win the world and paint the town,
while other worlds are breaking down,
we'll get along just fine.
You and I were friends, and only just,
but when has that stopped us?
We two do play the game without a plan,
because we can.
And even when the clock was striking twelve,
we were both so caught up in ourselves.
Name a reason why I'd take it slow;
this isn't love, it's just a fashion show.
We'll get along just fine,
we'll get along just fine,
we'll win the world and paint the town,
while London Bridge is falling down,
we'll get along just fine.
We'll get along just fine,
we'll get along just fine,
we'll win the world and paint the town,
while other worlds are breaking down,
we'll get along just fine.
We'll get along just fine.

Waltz No. 3
Do you have a moment to spend
hearing out the words of a friend of a friend?
There's something I think you should hear,
just one thing I ought to make clear
If you will lend me your ear
and listen here,
my dear.
I suppose I ought to confess,
I thought of you when I put on this dress,
I was hoping only for a glance
this was no happenstance,
see, I wrote this waltz for a chance
to take your hands,
and dance.
You don't need to humor me,
that will not be necessary
and if so there's no need for making haste
but if you would like a taste
go ahead and place your hands on my waist,
Vienna waits
for you.

The Things I Will Say Are All True
the moon is a cheshire cat
smiling upon you,
the stars are his frozen tears
of pain, joy, and gospel
according to john, you
grow lovelier every year.
the moon is a loveseat
that hangs from a willow,
and i hear the view's mighty fair;
the stars are the cars
that our loved ones drive,
and the headlights that lead them there.

The River
yes, things have changed,
but there's still blood in my veins
so it's still somewhat the same
even though you're not here
I still get up and go
I still put on my clothes
I still love because I know
how to fight against the fear
I still love you
but life goes on without you
I still love you
but the river rolls on without you
I still love you
but life goes without you,
the river rolls on without you,
the river rolls on.
I still put on a show,
I still feel it in my bones
when the music shakes my soul
even though you're not here
I still consume and create
Still know how to celebrate
I still love because I hate
living lost, alone, in fear
I still love you
but life goes on without you
I still love you
but the river rolls on without you
I still love you
but life goes on without you,
yeah, the river rolls on without you,
the river rolls on.
Yes I miss you
but I'm not alone without you
Damn I miss you
but life goes on without you
Yes I miss you
but I'm not alone without you
life goes on without you
the river rolls on
Life was never cream & sugar cuppa tea
But with or without you, life's a ball with me
Life was never cream & sugar cuppa tea
but with or without you, life's a ball with me
Life was never cream & sugar cuppa tea
But with or without you, life's a ball with me
Life was never cream & sugar cuppa tea
but with or without you, life's a ball with me
I still love you

Damn I miss you
but life goes on without you
Yes I miss you
but I'm not alone without you
life goes on without you
the river rolls on
I still know how to live
I still know how to give
I still know how to love
how to fight and forgive
I still know how to laugh
I still know how to cry
And I'm still gonna live
every minute until I die
Life was never cream & sugar cuppa tea
But with or without you, life's a ball with me

The Cat and the Milkman
The milkman, I tell you,
was all of a dither
when he saw what he'd taken
the pains to deliver
fast in the paws
of a cat black as coal,
sitting atop of
a telephone pole!
Though you'd never guess,
he was nevertheless
sitting atop of a telephone pole!
it was a morning
a regular tuesday
a workday, a schoolday,
and also a newsday;
but key to our story
and crucial to state:
the milk was delivered
each tuesday at eight.
eight ante meridian,
they let out the kitty and
picked up the milk in the morning at eight.
the cat, like a cat, was
attracted to dairy
(you'll notice that fact is
not extraordinary--
but slick was this cat,
he was quick, that was that,
's philosophy was to eat, drink, and be merry),
and he had a plot that
might not get him caught
to make off with the milk, though the prospect was scary
light was his step when
he slipped out the house
quiet as needs be
to reel in a mouse
so everyone feared
when the milk disappeared
that they ought to be on the lookout for a louse
but if they knew the ilk
of who'd taken their milk,
i tell you this truly they'd furrow their brows.
his method was nothing that
you could'na begat
'twas simple as find-
ing a pimple to pick at!
All fast in his paws
he did catch with his claws
a bottle of milk from the step where it sat
one must give pause
maybe drop one's jaws,
"fancy that, look, look at the milk thief--it's a cat!"
Terrified, the verifed
feline thief
ran half in fear and half
in disbelief
climbed to a height where
he knew or 'tleast thought
that he, sure as hea-
ven, would never be caught
by the well-meaning, old, son-of-a-daught-
er who brought the bought milk that the black cat sought
I'm certain you know where
this story is going
if not, then just follow
the sound of the meowing
up that pole where
the cat's sitting owing
to circumstances put in place by th'all-knowing
beyond his control
he's atop of the pole
as sure as the drought-tortured grass is not growing.
